Jubilee: Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra

Written in 2017, revised in 2026.

Celebratory, energetic, and persistent best describe Jubilee, a one-movement concerto grosso for string orchestra and solo string quartet.  Using a conventional ABA form and non-traditional harmonies, Jubilee teaches students about marcato bowings, extensions for cellos, and sharp third fingers for shoulder instruments.  Upper strings and cellos remain in first position (with suggestions for more advanced shifting), whereas basses shift through fourth.  Additionally, you can program Jubilee to challenge your top players while providing an accessible piece for your whole program.

Sinfonia for String Orchestra

Adapted from Two Movements for String Quartet.

Adapted in 2002; revised in 2004, 2016, and 2026.

Sinfonia has a light, energetic, and playful sound. This is a great work to introduce non-traditional harmonies to your orchestra as it utilizes quartal and triadic chords constructed from traditional major and minor scales. Additionally, using a conventional sonata-allegro form, Sinfonia explores the use of ostinato figures, thematic variation, and musical texture. Players will also develop their skills using multiple bowing techniques, shifting through seventh position, and a few passages in tenor clef for the cellos. This is truly an engaging work for advanced high school players!

Skin and Bones

American Folk Tune, arranged by Paul Alan Price-Brenner

Arranged in 2014, revised in 2026.

This arrangement of Skin and Bones is great for bridging orchestra and general music repertoire. Students will enjoy performing a work they learned when younger, and teachers will appreciate an educational piece that features every section for the Halloween season. Written in E minor, this arrangement introduces shoulder players to extensions for 1st and 3rd fingers, bassists will learn to shift to second position, and everyone will improve playing in 3/4 time. A must-have for developing string orchestra programs.
